Hello

I exported the template from the latest PAL (v2.7.4)

When I try to run the logging I get an error. The server's application logs show the following.

The service was unable to open the log file D:\PerfLogs\PAL_Microsoft_Internet_Information_Services_5.x_6.x_7.x v1.3.2_000002.blg for log PAL_Microsoft_Internet_Information_Services_5.x_6.x_7.x and will be stopped. Check the log folder for existence, spelling, permissions, and ensure that no other logs or applications are writing to this log file. You can reenter the log file name using the configuration program. This log will not be started. The error returned is: Access is denied.

and then individual errors like:

The service was unable to add the counter '\Web Service Cache\Output Cache Current Hits %' to the PAL_Microsoft_Internet_Information_Services_5.x_6.x_7.x log or alert. This log or alert will continue, but data for that counter will not be collected. The error returned is: The specified counter could not be found.

The service was unable to add the counter '\Network Inspection System\Average inspection latency (sec/bytes)' to the PAL_Microsoft_Internet_Information_Services_5.x_6.x_7.x log or alert. This log or alert will continue, but data for that counter will not be collected. The error returned is: The specified object is not found on the system.

It shows that you are getting Access Denied. You have to have administrator rights on the system to create data collectors.

Released: PAL 2.7.5 (May 20, 2015)

Introduction

PAL v2.x is an easy to use tool which simplifies the analysis of Microsoft Performance Monitor Logs (.blg | .csv). It generates an HTML report containing graphical charts and alerts of the performance counters using known thresholds.

Usage

Execute the PAL icon in your Start Programs menu or run the PAL.ps1 script from a PowerShell.

Installation

Tested on 64-bit Windows 7 and 64-bit Windows 10 and should work on Windows Server 2008 R2 and later. Not recommended or tested on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 since these operating systems cannot open counter logs captured on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and later. Not recommended for 32-bit versions of Windows or Windows Server.

Run the PAL setup MSI file that ships in the zip file at http://pal.codeplex.com.

Required Products (free and public):
Warning: The PAL installer (MSI) will set the PowerShell execution policy to unrestricted. This will allow the execution of PowerShell scripts.

Globalization Known Issue: PAL has only been tested using an English-US locale. If you have problems using PAL v2.x, then try again using an English-US locale. This is an open source and voluntary project, so any assistance with globalization and localization is appreciated.

Big thank you to the Microsoft Premier Field Engineering (PFE) organization for the great support and feedback!

v2.7.5
  • Bug fix: Fixed a bug where the error, "Property 'Computer' cannot be found on this object." would come up when processing some CSV files.
  • Bug fix: Fixed a bug where the error, "The property 'Count' cannot be found on this object. " would come up when processing a BLG file with the Exchange 2013 threshold file.

v2.7.4
  • Bug fix: Fixed a bug the PowerStates.xml threshold file would return an error of "not compatible".
  • Bug fix: Fixed a bug related to this error: Cannot convert the "System.Object[]" value of type "System.Object[]" to "System.Double".
  • Change: Disabled analyses titled with "“(Total Latch Wait Time) / (Latch Waits/Sec)" in the SQL Server related threshold files since the threshold does not reflect the description.
  • Change: The new Exchange Server 2013 threshold file was not inheriting from SystemOverview.xml. Fixed.

Updated Release: PAL 2.7.5 (May 20, 2015)

PAL doesn't support TSV files. Use Relog.exe (part of the operating system) to convert it to a CSV file. PAL supports CSV or BLG files only.

Ah, unfortunately, the counter logs were recorded in a non-English language and PAL's string matching is based on English counter names. This is something that I've been wanting to fix for a long time, but would need all of the counter translations of all of the supported languages - no easy task. The best I can offer is to use the Perfmon Log Translator (PLT) tool at http://pal.codeplex.com/releases/view/21261 to translate the logs into English until we can get the translation part solved. I'm sorry, but I just don't have the resources to add translation to PAL yet.

Attempting to use this fantastic tool for first time in 4 years. Went through using the wizard and designated a CSV file. I tried choosing to process "process all counters" and not. Both times I got a "divide by 0 error." I'm unsure if this is user error or not. Any feedback appreciated.

I can see now from the original poster's log that he was trying to analyse a .tsv file, however I'm getting the same error with a .blg file. I've tried using relog.exe to change it to a CSV and then running PAL on the resulting CSV, but that also fails. The PAL.log file is attached.

Hi,

For some reason recently the templates which get exported (in my case specifically around SQL Server templates) aren't including the memory, disk, network and cpu counters anymore. Is this something I've misconfigured at my end, or is it now just the way it works to have to create two separate template exports to collect this information?

Not a major issue, but this did catch me off guard when collecting data from a client environment only to discover that all the usual OS counters were missing during the collection (resulting in us having to re-run this for them).

Once again, any help would be hugely appreciated :)

Thanks!

New Post: SQL Server Lock Timeout counter description

$

Hi,
The HTML rendered description of the SQL Server Lock Timeout/sec in the SQL Server 2012 template is: Number of lock requests that timed out. This does not include requests for NOWAIT locks. A value greater than zero might indicate that user queries are not completing.

However, the counter description is: Number of lock requests that timed out. This includes requests for NOWAIT locks.

This is confusing for people that put faith of their SQL database on PAL analysis and that trust the html rendered description.

Should'nt the template use the counter SQLLockTimeouts (timeout >0/sec) instead?

Hi Mario,

Haven't heard anything back as yet on this. So far I've just been having to export two sets of templates for OS and separate one for SQL, then run off two sets of PAL reports. Not ideal, but it gets the job done.

Kind regards,
Sia

It is likely missing the System Overview inheritance. In the PAL Wizard, go to the Threshold File tab, select the SQL threshold file, and then click the Add button and add the SystemOverview.xml file. Keep in mind that changes to a threshold file's inheritance is immediately saved to the threshold file.

Ah, sorry, the inheritance is missing from the SQL 2008R2 and SQL 2012 threshold files. Adding SystemOverview.xml will fix it. I went ahead and fixed it on my side and will publish it in the next release of the PAL tool. In the meantime, I have attached the fixed files.
